What was our Reaction?
The building of the Liberty ships was a reaction to a serious problem. World War II had begun and the troops worldwide needed supplies. The Problem: President Franklin D. Roosevelt needed cargo ships build faster than the U-Boats could sink them. The Germans were sinking the cargo ships faster than the United States could produce them. Solution: Using a design that was quick and easy, yet strong, the United States could produce cargo ships in an average of 6 weeks. Russian and Great Britain needed our help and using an old English design, the U.S. build the fleet of Liberty Ships.
