S. S. Jeremiah O' Brien:
The Last Liberty Unaltered
The S. S. Jeremiah O'Brien is the last Liberty ship unaltered and operable. Its current position is in San Francisco, California. The Jeremiah O'Brien served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters or war. She survived attacks and made 7 voyages. She was launched on June 19, 1943, built in 56 days. She made wartime voyages between the east coast, Canada, and the United Kingdom, to South America, Australia, and the Philippines. The O'Brien has received a number of honors. She is the sole survivor of 5,500-vessel Allied armada that stormed the Normandy beaches on D-Day, June 6,
1944. She is also the last of the 236
Maine-built Liberties to come home to
the port where she was born. There
she sits as a memorial to what was.
